Top 5 Moments In My Life
· Jun 1, 10:36 AM
I was on Paul Boag's blog earlier today, and he had a post detailing the Top 5 Moments in his life. This inspired me to create my own Top 5. #5 - The Birth of my Sister - 9/10/1986 When my parents told me that I was going to have a little sister, I actually didn't know what to think. I was excited, but, being a boy, I though I wanted a brother instead. She turned out to be the best sibling anyone could ask for. I still remember those summers: staying home most of the day, watching old movies on AMC (American Movie Classics), eating corn chips and yogurt dip (Mom said sour cream was bad for us.) Those were some of the most enjoyable days of my life. Marlene: Sorry about being such a turd when I was younger. You're the best sister in the world! #4 - The First Time my Dad Took Me to Big Bend National Park - c. 1987 Big Bend National Park - what can I say about this park that hasn't already been said? This was my first encounter with real mountains. John Muir put it best when he said, "Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn." Although I was a wimpy twerp of a kid, I would say this was the defining moment for me and my love affair with the outdoors. I would not be the same person today, had it not been for my Dad introducing me to nature, in all her raw beauty. #3 - Catching My First Fish with an Artificial Lure - Late Spring of 2005 This is when I fell in love with fishing. My dad and I had been fishing many times before, and I enjoyed it, not because it was fishing, but because I was with my dad and it was something he enjoyed. We were bait fisherman--we'd put a dead shrimp or piece of squid on the hook, cast it out, and hope for the best. But in the late spring of 2005, I lived in New Braunfels, TX. One of the greatest rivers in Texas flows through New Braunfels--The Guadalupe. Me and the wife were trying to keep a cleaning business going, and it wasn't working. So, I was at Wal-Mart one day and decided to buy a crappy telescopic fishing rod set with all these crappy little lures for 20 bucks. I went down to the Guadalupe, cast an inline spinner and relaxed. I had done lure fishing before, but I didn't know the principles behind it and never caught anything. But this time, I did. It was an 8 inch Guadalupe Bass. I couldn't believe it. I was hooked. I devoured all I could get my hands on when it came to freshwater fishing, and as the saying goes, I was hooked. #2 - Getting My Acceptance Letter to Bethel - 1/15/2001 This was the moment when all my hard work for God paid off. I reached a goal I had set 16 years before. To me, this was the first real accomplishment of my adult life. Forget graduation...with today's educational system, that's the easiest thing to do. But to live my life the way God wanted me to, and then to be able to serve him full-time? That was an amazing feeling. #1 - Getting Married - 3/4/2005 This moment will always stick with me. This was the second time in my life I felt real accomplishment. I was so happy to be marrying someone that I loved, and that loved me unconditionally. This was the BEST decision I ever made, and every morning that I wake up next to her I feel like I can conquer the world. She makes me feel like a real man and not just the kid I know I am. She doesn't care that I don't make a lot of money, all she wants from me is love. And that's a good thing, because that's about all I have to give. Amber: Thank you so much for saying yes. You saved my life! Well, there's my Top 5 Moments in Life. What are yours?
